Internet Access
Internet Service Providers (ISP)
- offer direct access to the World Wide Web via the Internet
- provide e-mail accounts
- allow customers to publish and store their own Web pages on their servers
ISPs charge either a flat fee or they may charge according to the amount of time spent online (the way telephone companies bill for calls.) WebTycho users are responsible for locating and selecting their own ISPs and for paying their ISP bills.
To use WebTycho your ISP must provide
- Access to port 80
- Access to run graphical Web browsers
- An e-mail account
- Access to ports 1533 and 8082 if you wish to use the optional Chat Rooms and optional TFE.
Your Employer's Local Area Network (LAN) If your company has installed security firewalls you may have difficulty accessing WebTycho Chat Rooms. If so, ask your system administrator for access to ports 1533 and 8082; if that is not possible, don't worry: Using the chat room cannot be required in your class.
If you can't telnet or FTP from or to UMUC Nova or Polaris servers, ask your system administrator for the IP address at your LAN firewall from which to access UMUC computers.
Reducing Internet Charges Unless you have unlimited service, your costs for Internet use may be high and you may find it helpful to work offline as often as possible to reduce your Internet access charges. Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer include features that allow you to work with web sites offline to minimize Internet connection charges. For instructions see your browser's Help menu.
